GGGI and the UAE to collaborate on the development of green growth strategy and policy

Abu Dhabi/Seoul: The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Foreign Affairs has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). The agreement includes the establishment of a Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regional office in Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City as well as the development of joint capacity-building programs. The announcement was made by Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Special Envoy for Energy and Climate Change and Chief Executive of Masdar. The establishment of GGGI, which is headquartered in Seoul, Korea, was announced by Korean President Lee Myung-bak in 2009 at the 15th Conference of Parties in Copenhagen to promote environmentally sustainable economic growth.

Following the memorandum of understanding, GGGI experts will be dispatched to the regional office in the Middle East to develop and execute low-emission green growth projects for a green growth master plan tailored to UAE’s conditions. Training and capacity-building programs will also be conducted on green growth initiatives at the regional, national and local levels through reciprocal human resource exchange programs. GGGI activities will also involve financial support for joint projects, collaborative research and joint programs.

A specific focus of the United Arab Emirates will be to create a tri-party collaboration involving GGGI, the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) towards promoting the adoption of renewable energy solutions, new green technologies and carbon-neutral measures to advance economic growth as well as quality of life in Masdar City, across the country and the globe.

During the signing ceremony, which took place at the premises of the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber said: “The mandate set out for GGGI by President Lee Myung-bak to help advance green economic growth is fully aligned with our forward thinking leadership’s vision. Such institutions are crucial to the adoption of renewable energy technologies and climate change mitigation and we. are delighted that GGGI has chosen to establish its regional office at Masdar City in Abu Dhabi. The partnership between the UAE and GGGI will promote the development of collaborative programs and activities that will catalyze green growth across the UAE and the region.”

Executive Director of GGGI, Richard Samans explained: “Through its presence in the UAE, GGGI will utilize its network of public-private partnerships to promote Masdar City as a world-class, smart city, in addition to developing the regional office as a knowledge-sharing, training and capacity-building center in the field of green growth.”

GGGI was officially launched in June 2010 to support the widespread dissemination and implementation of a new model of development, green growth. The paradigm of green growth integrates objectives for economic development and environmental sustainability including poverty reduction, green job creation, social development and energy security through the promotion of green technologies and innovations. Governed by a Board of Directors composed of various international experts and representatives of sponsor and partner governments, GGGI is an independent, not-for-profit “think and act tank” that is seeking to become a full-fledged international organization by 2012.

GGGI is headquartered in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
