This is a globally recognised accreditation which aims to assist those travelling around the world to make informed decisions about the companies they patron.

Following the implementation of STI's Sustainable Tourism Eco-Certification Program (STEP) over twelve months, Guinness Storehouse is delighted to announce that it is the first business to be eco-certified in Ireland having achieved a 3 star accreditation. This is a globally recognised accreditation which aims to assist those travelling around the world to make informed decisions about the companies they patron.

STEP provided Guinness Storehouse with a framework to take sustainable practice to all areas of the Storehouse, and provided a mechanism to educate, motivate and involve staff. Managing Director at Guinness Storehouse, Paul Carty said "Sustainability and enhancing the environment of the Dublin communities has been a core philosophy of the Guinness company since it was founded and we are committed to retaining this philosophy by having a positive impact in the community where we do business, and to preserving the local area where our visitors and colleagues work, live and play. Accordingly, we are delighted to receive this acknowledgement of our hard work towards a sustainable Guinness Storehouse and we are committed to integrating leading sustainability principles into our core business strategy".

Throughout the STEP programme, the Guinness Storehouse was assessed across a wide range of practices outlined by STI including Visitor Experience, Energy & Climate Change, Community Impacts and Supports, Training & Communications and Purchasing and Supply Chain Management. Best practices implemented by the Guinness Storehouse include:

Visitor Experience - Guinness Storehouse is committed to ensuring that visitors have a great Dublin Experience as well as a great Guinness Experience

Staff are given extensive training on what there is to see and do in Dublin so that they are able to assist visitors and offer local recommendations and suggestions.

Guinness Storehouse has also designed a downloadable podcast, that as well as being an accompaniment to the visitor experience at Guinness Storehouse, walks the listener through the streets of Dublin towards St. James's Gate. The podcast describes the sights and educates the visitor about the heritage and culture of the local area, as well as being a great way to encourage visitors to walk, and reduce the carbon footprint of visiting the Storehouse.

Energy & Climate Change- Heat and electricity used at Guinness Storehouse is produced on St James's Gate Brewery using Combined Heat Power (CHP) which is highly efficient as it reduces the use of primary energy which in turn leads to lower C02 emissions. There is also a commitment in place to reduce overall energy consumption at Guinness Storehouse by 5% by June 2011.

Community Impacts & Supports - Guinness Storehouse has built a relationship with the D8CEC (Community Education Centre) where it actively engages with the local community in order to provide employment opportunities for local people. Guinness Storehouse also believes it can benefit greatly from the skills and talents of local candidates who can provide visitors with an authentically Irish experience

Training & Communications - Guinness Storehouse employs a full time training manager who ensures all staff are trained in a broad range of areas from Health and Safety to sustainability awareness. Guinness Storehouse has fostered a powerful culture where the customer really is at the heart of the business and this is portrayed through the welcome they receive when they visit the home of Guinness. Recruitment, training and development are key enablers in the creation of an amazing experience. This has lead to word of mouth endorsement being the key driver of the business.

Purchasing & Supply Chain Management - As part of the STI auditing process Guinness Storehouse tracked it's purchasing of recycled/eco-friendly products and the value of local goods and services purchased. With over 50% of all products purchased falling into this category, the aim is to increase this to 60% in year one with improvements year on year. Over 95% of all goods and services purchased are from suppliers within the greater Dublin area and Guinness Storehouse continues to ensure it supports and promotes the use of local businesses.

As well as the STI Eco-certification, Guinness Storehouse has been awarded the best in the Entertainment and Leisure at the 2011 Green Awards
