ASEAN Foundation Executive Director Dr. Makarim Wibisono was one of the plenary speakers at the International Singapore Compact CSR Summit with the theme "Corporate Social Responsibility: Values for Sustainability" held on 5-6 September 2011 in Singapore. In his presentation, Dr. Wibisono highlighted the formation of the ASEAN CSR Network, a regional network of CSR practitioners in ASEAN established in line with the mandates of the ASEAN Blueprint for Socio-Cultural Community.
Dr. Wibisono shared that the ASEAN CSR Network aims to be a platform for networking and exchange, be a repository of ASEAN knowledge on CSR, a capacity-builder and an advocate of CSR in the region. In line with these objectives, the Network also intends to promote the role of CSR in human rights advocacy through support of internationally-accepted human right principles as well as close collaboration with relevant bodies such as the ASEAN Inter-governmental Commission on Human Rights.
ASEAN CSR Network founding members Mr. Edgardo Amistad (Chairman of the Network and of the Philippines’ League of Corporate Foundations) and Ms. Yanti Koestoer, Executive Director of Indonesia Business Links, presented at the workshop on Business and Community Investment where they shared their respective organizations’ experience in making mutually beneficial investment choices as well business involvement in the community.
The two-day conference was followed by a seminar by Dr. Wayne Visser, Founder and Director of CSR International who lectured on "CSR 2.0: The New DNA of Business". Hosted by the ASEAN CSR Network and Singapore Compact for CSR, the seminar delved on the traditional approaches of CSR practices vis-à-vis new approaches, which Mr. Visser dubbed as CSR 2.0. Mr. Visser’s presentation focused on how business needs to transform its CSR approaches characterized by five key principles, namely, creativity, scalability, responsiveness, glocality and circularity. These principles of CSR 2.0, according to Mr. Visser, are now being interpreted in the areas of value creation, good governance, societal contribution and environmental integrity.
The seminar was followed by a meeting among the members of the ASEAN CSR Network with representatives from the International Chamber of Commerce-Brunei, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Mr. Thomas Thomas, CEO of the ASEAN CSR Network, gave a briefing about the Network and the three organizations expressed interest to become members and participate in the activities of the ASEAN CSR Network.
Catalyzed by the ASEAN Foundation, the ASEAN CSR Network was formally established on 8 December 2010 with the following founding members - Indonesia Business Links, International Chamber of Commerce – Malaysia, League of Corporate Foundations (Philippines), Singapore Compact for CSR, CSR Club of the Thai Listed Companies Association and the ASEAN Foundation.
