Major international events in Korea - 2012

In 2011, Korea hosted several major international events including the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Championships in Daegu, the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Busan and the 19th Session of the UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) General Assembly in Gyeongju.

After the colossal G20 Seoul Summit in November 2010, Seoul citizen could enjoy some relative peace in 2011 but 2012 will wake them (us) up very soon.

If you need some good reasons to visit Seoul (and other Korean cities), that are not necessarily related to shopping, plastic surgery or K-Pop, here is the calendar of some prominent global events happening in Korea in 2012. Please feel free to comment if you heard about other events!

March 13 to 14, Seoul
2nd Annual Conference of the Partners of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism‏
This Annual Conference is organized under the distinguished patronage of the Korean Ministry of the Environment and with support from the Government of France & The United Nations Environment Programme - Division of Technology, Industry and Economics.
One year after its establishment, the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism is in full operation. The 2nd Annual Conference will provide an opportunity for partners to meet face to face, to network and to discussthe progress of the Global Partnership.

One of the objectives of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism is to share knowledge and inform on the latest research on sustainable tourism. Consequently, an international symposium on “Sustainable Tourism – A Panorama of the Last 10 Years” will be held in Seoul, Republic of South Korea on March 12th, 2012 “back-to-back” with the 2nd Annual Conference of Partners.

This symposium will showcase best practices developed from the lessons learned over the past decade in three key topics:
 •Tourism and Environment
 •Poverty alleviation
 •Green Innovation

March 26 to 27, Seoul
The "2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit" will be the largest summit in the security field that discusses international cooperative measures to protect nuclear materials and facilities from terrorist groups, with participation from more than 50 heads of state and international organizations.

May 12 to August 12, Yeosu
Yeosu Expo’s theme, “The Living Ocean and Coast,” was divided into three sub-themes: Coastal Development and Preservation, New Resources Technology, and Creative Maritime Activities. These sub-themes have been further developed into 6 thematic groups, namely, Climate & Environment, Marine Life, Marine Industry & Technology, Marine City & Marine Civilization, and Marine Arts, each of which will be demonstrated in the respective sub-theme pavilions.

September 15 to 6, Jeju island (soon to be declared New Wonder of Nature?)
The IUCN World Conservation Congress is the world’s largest and most important conservation event. Held every four years, the Congress aims to improve how we manage our natural environment for human, social and economic development.

October 2 to 7, Seoul and Incheon
Skål is a professional organisation of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry's managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest.
The first Club was founded in 1932 in Paris and Skål International today has approximately 20,000 members in 450 Clubs throughout 85 nations. Skål International is governed by an Executive Committee of seven members, elected by delegates to an annual General Assembly, held during the World Congress, hosted by a different country each year.

October 19 to 28, Gangneung
Inter-City intangible cultural cooperation network is an international organization of local governments which aims at safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage and ensuring sustainable development in local government level in the world.
