Initiatives to develop sustainable and responsible tourism
The Congo has been engaged for some years in the development of ecotourism on its territory. With the help of the World Tourism Organisation, the country has embarked on the protection of its environmental and landscape heritage and developing of its national parks to make them accessible for tourists.
The Congolese government is also planning to create an agency and a tourist office to allow greater development of the country's image. This policy of promoting the country has resulted in the presence of a Congolese stand at the International Tourism Fair held from 19 to 23 January 2011 in Madrid. This event, which drew over a million visitors from around the world, enabled the Congolese Minister of Tourism, Martial Mathieu Kani and his staff to promote ecotourism and to present the Congolese initiatives to develop its rich natural heritage. Broadcast by the media, this promotion received a favorable reception in Spain.
The Congolese stand attracted more than one hundred thousand visitors
"This performance was the fruit of a great sensibilisation compaign and marketing efforts by managers and agents of the Department of Industry Tourism and recreation, but also by the Congolese present in Madrid and Spanish hostesses employed for the occasion" said Mathieu Kani.
After presenting his respects to Queen Sofia of Spain, Martial Mathieu Kani spoke with several players in the tourism sector, interested in investment opportunities and tourism in the Congo.
Creating a new tourist site
In partnership with the Republic of the Congo, the group Total E&P Congo will build a recreation village for personnel of the Total E&P in the district Madingo-Kayes, near the village of Nlamba. This tourist site, covering an area of 20 hectares, will respect the environment while providing a playground for children during the holidays.
Access to this site will also be open to the surrounding population. The site will be operational from next year and will have several playgrounds and an educative space. Its will be able to accept from 100 to 150 people per visit.
Environmentally friendly, officials from Total E&P Congo ensure that water will be supplied through a borehole. As for energy, electricity will be generated by wind turbines and solar panels. Waste will be sorted and recycled.
