On April 1st, 2014, the Sustainable Public Procurement Programme of the 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production was launched on the occasion of a side event of the 10th Session of the Open Working Groups on Sustainable Development Goals in New-York, USA.

This side event was convened by the Korea Environmental Industry and Technology Institute (KEITI), ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that have formally committed to co-lead the Sustainable Public Procurement programme of the 10YFP.

What is the 10YFP?
The 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP), adopted by world leaders at the Rio+20 Conference, is a global framework of action to enhance international cooperation for and accelerate the shift towards sustainable consumption and production patterns in both developed and developing countries. The main objectives of the 10YFP are to contribute to resource efficiency, decouple economic growth from environmental degradation & resource use while creating decent job and economic opportunities, and contribute to poverty eradication & shared prosperity. To this end, the 10YFP supports implementation of regional and national policies and initiatives; builds capacities for the mainstreaming of SCP into sustainable development policies, programmes and strategies; facilitates access to financial and technical assistance for developing countries; and serves as an information and knowledge platform on SCP to enable all stakeholders to expand their networks, share tools, initiatives and best practices. What is the SPP Programme of the 10YFP?
The 10YFP Programme on Sustainable Public Procurement (SPP) is a collaborative global framework that aims at building the case for SPP. The programme has two objectives:
  1. Build the case for SPP: improve the knowledge on SPP and its effectiveness as a tool to promote sustainable consumption and production, support greener economies and sustainable development.
  2. Support the implementation of SPP on the ground through increased collaboration, and better access to capacity building tools and support through SPP experts.
The 10YFP Programme on SPP: Building on a 10-year journey
The 10YFP Programme on SPP further amplifies and extends the impact of the Sustainable Public Procurement Initiative (SPPI), which was launched in June 2012 at the Rio+20 Conference (www.sppinitiave.org). The SPPI was itself a continuation of the Marrakech Task Force on Sustainable Public Procurement, led by the government of Switzerland from 2005 until 2011.
